Featured Neighborhood: Chevy Chase
Part of the real estate world is discovering our city and all of the different wonderful parts that come together to form one larger whole. Lexington is very interesting geographically speaking. The downtown area is like a a hub with several spokes (or main roads) branch off and out from the center. Most main thoroughfares lead to downtown. There are many interesting neighborhoods that dot the city. One thing I want to educate folks on is the diverse and historic areas in our city. My first featured spot is Chevy Chase.
The Chevy Chase neighborhood is a fantastic area, both geographically and in character. This eclectic neighborhood is centrally located in the heart of Lexington--situated between Tates Creek Road and Richmond Road extending from near downtown out towards Cooper Drive and in great proximity to the University of Kentucky campus. In real estate, we all know that "location, location, location" really matters, but this neighborhood is much more than just a location. It offers a unique lifestyle in the heart of a bustling city.
Chevy Chase was originally developed back in the 1920's through the 1940's. It is referred to as an Early Automobile Suburb, due to the fact that more people could afford an automobile for commuting to work. During this time of development, neighborhoods were being built in lower density fashion with larger yards and were characterized by more of a park-like setting. Many of the trees and natural features of the land were maintained when designing streets so as to maintain the feel of the neighborhood. Chevy Chase is characterized by curving streets, mature trees, and historical value knocking it out of the ball park!
There are several styles of housing available in the Chevy Chase area, but the most popular is the brick Cape Cod style featuring a detached garage in the rear, followed by the ranch of home of the 1940's. Early homes in this neighborhood are the most detailed and diverse properties in the area dating back to 1919! Obviously, there are many historical options for housing in this gorgeous area, but what else sets this neighborhood apart?
So, glad you asked! Chevy Chase has experienced quite the expansion of quaint, local shops and restaurants that compliment this neighborhood perfectly. The retail district of this community includes, ice cream parlors, coffee shops, a variety of local dining options, and many unique local retailers. Not only is there a plethora of tasty bistros and restaurants to sample and excellent shops to explore, this is a very walkable community! It is part of the charm of this neighborhood--biking and walking are quite the norm.
Chevy Chase is one of the oldest and most beloved areas in Lexington. Chocked full of history that reflects the ups and downs of our nation. This is the perfect neighborhood for singles or families. Come see for yourself why this neighborhood has survived the decades!
